How to Add Markers (Locators) in Ableton Live

Music Production

In Ableton Live, markers are called locators. They live in the Arrangement View and let you label sections and jump around your song while it plays.

How to add a locator

  1. Switch to Arrangement View (Tab toggles between Session and Arrangement).
  2. Move the playhead to where you want the locator.
  3. Right-click the scrub area (just below the beat-time ruler) and choose Add Locator. The locator is placed at the playhead.

Rename and jump between locators

  • Select a locator by clicking its triangle, then use Rename from the context menu, or press Ctrl+R (Windows) / Cmd+R (Mac).
  • Use the Previous Locator and Next Locator buttons to jump between them during playback.

Leave notes on clips and tracks (Info Text)

  1. Right-click a clip, track or device.
  2. Choose Edit Info Text and type your note.
  3. Hover over that item later to see the note in Live's Info View.

Markers are for you. Comments are for your collaborators.

Locators and info text stay inside your Live Set, which is no help when the feedback is coming from a vocalist, a label or a mix client. With Notetracks, you share a link to the bounce and collaborators leave timestamped comments right on the waveform. Every note lands on the exact moment it's about.
