How to Add Markers in FL Studio (Time Markers)

Music Production

Markers make a long FL Studio project easier to navigate: label the verse, flag the bar where the drums drop, or set up loop and punch-in points for recording. In FL Studio they're called time markers and they live on the Playlist timeline.

How to add a time marker

  1. Open the Playlist and move the playhead to where you want the marker.
  2. Open the Playlist options menu (the arrow at the top left of the Playlist), then Time markers → Add one. Or right-click the timeline ruler and add a marker from there.
  3. Shortcut on Windows: Alt+T.

Add markers around a selection

  • Select a range on the timeline, then choose Time markers → Add two. A marker is placed at each end of the selection.
  • Add one every drops a marker every 1, 2, 4 or 8 bars across the selection, handy for laying out a song structure quickly.

Rename, move or delete

  • Right-click a marker to rename it, add another, or delete it.
  • Click and drag a marker to move it.

Give a marker an action

Right-click a marker to change what it does during playback:

  • Start: playback starts from this marker.
  • Loop: when playback reaches the end of the Playlist, it jumps back here and keeps playing.
  • Marker loop: jumps back to the previous Loop marker, creating a loop.
  • Marker skip: skips ahead to the next marker.
  • Pause: stops playback when it reaches the marker.
  • Punch in / Punch out: set these on two markers to record automatically between them.

Keep notes in FL Studio

  • Fruity Notebook is a plugin you can add to any track or the master to keep written notes inside your project, with several pages you can flip between.

Markers are for you. Comments are for your collaborators.

Markers keep your session organized, but they stay inside your project file. When you need notes from an artist, a client or a mix engineer, you need something they can open without FL Studio. With Notetracks, you share a link to the bounce and collaborators leave timestamped comments right on the waveform, so every note points to the exact moment it's about.
