How to Add Markers in Pro Tools

Music Production

In Pro Tools, markers are stored as Memory Locations. Use them to label song sections, flag a bad edit, or jump straight to the second chorus while you work. They show up on the Markers ruler above your tracks and in the Memory Locations window.

How to add a marker

  1. Place the playhead where you want the marker. This works while the session is stopped or playing.
  2. Press Enter on the numeric keypad. Or click the + button next to the Markers ruler.
  3. The New Memory Location dialog opens. Give the marker a name, and add details in the Comments field if you need them.

Pressing Enter during playback is the fastest way to drop markers on the fly, for example while you listen through a mix and flag every spot that needs attention.

  • Delete: hold Option (Mac) or Alt (Windows) and click the marker.

See every marker in one list

Open Window → Memory Locations, or press Cmd+5 (Mac) / Ctrl+5 (Windows) on the numeric keypad. Click any marker in the list to jump to it. You can also rename and delete markers from this window.

Keep notes in Pro Tools

  • Marker comments: each Memory Location has a Comments field, handy for notes like "fix breath at 1:42".
  • Track comments: show the Comments column in the Edit window (View → Edit Window Views → Comments) to write a note on each track.

Markers are for you. Comments are for your collaborators.

Markers keep your session organized, but they live inside the Pro Tools session. When the notes come from an artist, a producer or a client, they need something they can open without Pro Tools. With Notetracks, you share a bounce by link and collaborators leave timestamped comments right on the waveform. You can then export those comments and bring them into Pro Tools, lined up with the exact moments they're about.
